Alfalfa Sprouts Recall

A Michigan company is recalling bulk and retail-size packages of alfalfa sprouts because they might be contaminated with salmonella.

Living Foods, Inc. of Ionia said Thursday that one package of the sprouts tested positive for salmonella.  It said it was working with federal and state authorities to determine the source. It said no illnesses had been reported.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

It said the recall include 4-ounce cups, 4-ounce bags, 5-pound bulk containers, and boxes of four 1-pound plastic bags, all labeled as Living Foods, Inc. alfalfa sprouts. All of the products had a sell-by date of Oct. 2.

It advised consumers who purchased the items to discard them.
