Men Plead Guilty To Fraud, Wire Transfer Charges
Federal prosecutors in Michigan say two brothers from Somalia accused of $400,000 in food stamp fraud and of illegally transferring money overseas have pleaded guilty.
The government says Mohamed and Omar Sufi entered the plea Monday in Grand Rapids.
The brothers are owners of Halal Depot in Grand Rapids. Prosecutors say the men redeemed electronic food stamps for cash and nonfood items, taking 30 percent commissions.
Prosecutor say the men took up to 50 percent from benefits under the Women, Infants and Children programs.
They say the men wired thousands of dollars through an unlicensed money transfer business to the Middle East and Africa, charging a commission of 6 percent to 7 percent.
Sentencing hasn't been scheduled.
