A 72-year-old man was hit and killed Thursday evening as he tried to cross Gratiot Avenue in Clinton Township.
Police say the man the man was struck by an SUV as he was walking along Gratiot between 14 and 15 Mile roads. The SUV driver then stopped and was attempting to warn oncoming traffic and get help when the man was hit by a second vehicle. That driver also stopped.
The pedestrian died at Mt. Clemens Medical Center a short time later. His name was not immediately released.
Police said alcohol did not appear to be a factor, at least as far as the motorists were concerned. The incident remains under investigation.
