There’ll be a new sheriff in town when Mark Hackel officially takes over as Macomb County’s first elected county executive. The county starts accepting applications on Wednesday.
By law, applicants for the top law enforcement job have to be registered to vote in Macomb County, be at least 18, and a United States citizen.
Hackel’s successor will be chosen by a special committee made up of the county’s chief probate judge, prosecutor and clerk. The panel will meet again in mid-December to decide who they’ll interview.
The sheriffs office has the largest county-funded budget.
