Thousands Still Without Power, Dozens Of Schools Closed
About 6,000 DTE Energy customers are still waiting for their power to be restored after the weekend storm and bitterly cold temperatures created havoc. Dozens of schools are closed for a second straight day, keeping thousands of students at home.
Utility spokesman John Austerberry says the extreme temperatures hampered their power-restoration efforts.
"Dangerously cold, really," is how Austerberry referred to the weather conditions. "It does slow down the process considerably, because our workers have to stop more frequently, take more breaks to get warmed up so that they're staying safe."
Austerberry says if nothing else happens, all power should be restored sometime Monday afternoon.
While metro Detroit continues grappling with the aftermath of the storm, dozens of schools have cancelled classes for thousands of students again today.
