Gas Bandit Busted
Mid-Michigan police say they have ended the reign of a gasoline bandit accused of using six stolen license plates and three different vehicles to avoid paying $680 in gas during the past year.
Police say that 28-year-old Benjamin Williams of Mount Pleasant faces single counts of unarmed robbery, larceny of gas and assault and battery. He was released on a $20,000 bond.
Police arrested Williams Thursday when a gas station employee recognized his vehicle. They say Williams fled the scene when the employee confronted him, but later returned to watch from a distance when officers responded.
Williams was arrested when he attempted to leave the area. He is suspected in 16 incidents.
Court officials did not immediately know if Williams had a lawyer.
