When is the right time to move to a senior community?

*This content is provided by Waltonwood Senior Living.

The best time to make the move to a senior community is before your loved one has something happen that ultimately forces them to have to move into a senior community. The decision can often be difficult to begin with but being proactive and educating yourself and your loved one on the benefits and choices will make for an easier transition.

There are a few things to look for when deciding if it is time to talk with a loved one about the possibility of moving to a senior living community:

-Is the house hard for them to maintain? Are there tasks around the house that are not being completed as they use to? Is it hard for them to maneuver around the house and go up and down steps?

-Are they socially active? Are they still visiting with friends and neighbors? Do they leave the house? Have they stopped participating in activities they once enjoyed? Do they talk about being lonely?

-Are they eating properly? Can they grocery shop and prepare their own meals? Do you notice any weight loss?

-Are they forgetful?

-Are they scheduling medical appointments? Are they getting exercise? Are they taking their medication and getting their prescriptions refilled?

-Do they feel safe?

If the answers to any of these questions concern you and other family members than it may be time to start looking into senior living communities. It is very important that the whole family is involved in the decision-making process. A lot of people will not readily admit to infirmities that limit them from functioning at 100% capacity and as a result they put themselves at risk. Family members can be helpful in reaching the right decision and in assisting with making the transition smooth and pleasant.
