Clawson Library Looking For Increase In Operating Funds

CLAWSON (WWJ) It was two years ago that Clawson voters approved a tax increase to expand and remodel the Blair Memorial Library. But the library's Board of Trustees now say they want a millage increase for operating funds.

It's a growing problem at communities everywhere: The issue of declining property values and the city of Clawson is not exempt. The city has been subsidizing the library due to declining tax dollars, and this year, that amount could reach 100,000 dollars. It's money the city simply doesn't have.

City officials say reduced hours at the library and the possibility of job cuts at the Department of Public Works would have to be considered. Residents vote on the plan on May 3. The proposed .3 mill tax increase would cost homeowners an additional 17 dollars per year.
