In Detroit, the German Shepherd is top dog. That’s according to the American Kennel Club, which conducts an annual survey charting the most popular breeds.
WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with AKC spokesperson, Lisa Peterson, who has a theory about the dog’s popularity.
“I think that it goes along with… the feeling of pride of people in Detroit. They, you know, are proud of their dogs, and a German Shepard is very loyal and I think this breed really matches the personality of the residents in Detroit,” Peterson said.
Peterson said there was another surprise out of Detroit.
“The Rottweiler, nationally, is not even on the top ten list. So, it’s interesting to see the Rottweilers so high in Detroit — up there at number three,” she said.
Rounding out the top list here in Detroit are the Yorkshire Terrier, Labrador Retriever and the Shih Tsu. Detroit is only one of a handful of cities in which the Lab wasn’t number one.
