Novi Teen Dies, Hit While Standing On Freeway

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Novi teenager is dead after he was hit by a car along the Southfield Freeway.

Michigan State Police say 17-year-old Nathan Farooq pulled his vehicle off to the side of the freeway north of McNichols around 8 p.m. Tuesday and got out for some unknown reason.

Farooq was standing in the right lane of the Southfield freeway when he was hit by another car. He was taken to Sinai Grace Hospital where he died.

The other driver wasn't physically hurt.

State Police say drivers should always remember to pull off to the shoulder as far as possible and activate their emergency lights and dial 911 if there is an emergency. Other drivers should move over a lane and slow down when they see an inoperable vehicle, someone changing a tire, tow trucks and all emergency vehicles.

Farooq  was a seniors at Novi High School where he played for the varsity tennis team, and was a member of both the National Honor Society and Spanish Club.

School officials crisis counselors are being made available to students.
