Local Unions Vow To Fight Privatization Plan

DETROIT (WWJ)  A court battle is brewing in local courts between Detroit Public Schools Financial Manager Robert Bobb and Unions representing nearly seven hundred workers.

Local unions are vowing to fight a plan by DPS Financial Manager Robert Bobb to privatize the District's custodial, engineering, and grounds services.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Florence Walton reports on Bob's plan to outsource work.

The plan to eliminate nearly 700 positions will save the financially troubled District 75 million dollars over five years and Bobb says current employees will be able to apply for their jobs with Maryland based Sodexo and seven local companies he is contracting with for the work.

"I wanted to make sure that our employees were paid at their current hourly wage, this is being done, I wanted to make sure that firms and their partners were providing appropriate health care," Bobb stated.

The outsourcing plan begins after winter break in February.
