Stabenow Proposes New Incentives For Electric Cars

WASHINGTON (AP) - Consumers who buy plug-in electric vehicles could get a rebate of up to $7,500 at the point of sale under legislation being proposed by Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich.

The Michigan lawmaker is releasing a bill on Monday that proposes more incentives for electric cars.

Consumers get the current $7,500 tax incentive for electric cars when they file their taxes. The bill would make it available at the point of purchase.

Stabenow also wants tax credits for investments into electric vehicle recharging stations and for businesses that buy hybrid trucks. It also seeks more funding to develop the nation's advanced battery industry.

The White House has called for 1 million electric vehicles to be on the nation's roads by 2015.
