Lawrence Tech To Host Sustainability Conference For Engineers Week

Lawrence Technological University's Center for Sustainability will host the Detroit area's seventh annual Seminars on Sustainability conference Feb. 22-25 at the university's campus, 21000 W. 10 Mile Road, Southfield.

Co-sponsors of the event are the Affiliate Council of the Engineering Society of Detroit and the Detroit Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers.

The SOS2011 conference brings together professionals, educators, entrepreneurs, students and the public to learn more about issues related to sustainable industries, educational initiatives and "green" communities where collaboration, communication, innovation, service and stewardship are valued. The conference is open to all.

"This year's conference includes something for everyone interested in expanding their knowledge about sustainability, energy efficiency and entrepreneurship activities in our state," said Lawrence Tech Associate Professor Janice Means, chair of the SOS2011 conference committee and chair of ESD's Affiliate Council.

Beginning on Monday, Feb. 21, and throughout the week a display of award-winning sustainability-related projects will be open to the public in the University Technology and Learning Center gallery at Lawrence Tech.

Harry Giles, a University of Michigan professor and entrepreneur, will give a lecture on technological innovations on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Architecture Building auditorium at Lawrence Tech. The free lecture is open to the public. American Institute of Architects learning units are available.

Also on Tuesday, the ASHRAE Learning Institute will present a 6-hour continuing education course on ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2007, the "building energy standard" that the state of Michigan will incorporate into code in March. This seminar is targeted at design professionals, code officials and building owners and is being held at the ESD headquarters near Lawrence Tech.  AIA learning units and career education units are available.

Friday's sessions include tours, an expo and presentations addressing many aspects of sustainability, culminating with a panel discussion on the state of sustainability in Michigan.  AIA learning units and professional development hours are available.
