Prison Time For Ex-Coach, Lion In Sex Case

MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) - A former Detroit Lion and high school track coach will serve  two to fifteen years prison, after pleading guilty to having sex with a student.

In court Thursday, 39-year old Tommie Boyd apologised for his actions.

"I'm sorry that I'm standing before you.  I know that you have to impose the sentencing, and I respect that. And, I know that, whatever it may be, that God still has something bigger for me after all this is over with," he said.

The former Lions wide receiver pled guilty last month to second-degree sex charges in a 2009 case involving a then-14-year-old freshman female at Fraser High School.

Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Diane Druzinski said that, when he is released from prison, Boyd will wear tether for the rest of his life.

"It's a shame, because you did have some valuable skill and knowledge to offer," said Judge Druzinski.

"I'm sure the young lady involved and her family appreciate the fact that you're remorseful. I don't think it excuses your conduct in this case. In fact, I have to be perfectly honest with you, you're probably a parent's worst nightmare," Druzinski said.

The victim, who is now 17-years old, did not want to speak at the sentencing. An Assistant Macomb County Prosecutor said the young woman just wants to get on with her life.
