Chief Ronald Haddad who said it all started with an armed robbery at Fairlane Town Center.

As police pursued, Haddad said three suspects crashed and the bailed out of a white vehicle on the northbound Southfield Service Drive.

Haddad described what happened next.

"Very early information is that one of the suspects drew down on the officer with a weapon, pointed it at the officer, then apparently took his own life or harmed himself by firing the gun near or about his head," Haddad said.

But one witness said he saw everything and didn't believe that it happened like that.

"I seen the police chasing him around this corner. The police was chasing him. He fired one shot. He shot the boy, and he fell right there, never moved again," the man said.

A second suspect was taken into custody. The third, who disappeared into the neighborhood, is described as a black male approximately 35 years of age, wearing a black jacket and a white cap.

WWJ's Ron Dewey said the robbery itself took place at Starters Bar and Grill, before the mall had opened for business Monday morning.

"This was a very violent crime, where our officers were found to be under great provocation and showed absolute restraint," said Haddad in a statement issued later in the day.

Police were sharing no further details about the crime, as the investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sgt. Tom Lance at (313) 943-2292.
