DPS Partners With Habitat For Humanity

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Public Schools' Randolph Career and Technical Center and Habitat for Humanity are partnering on a project that aims to donate a home to a family in need.

The project house will be built on the school site as a service-learning project for the students. Once the building is complete, it will be donated to a family in need.

The school has already made way on the project, by completing part of the sub-floor and other sections of the home. The ranch-style house will have three bedrooms and will be moved to a permanent location upon completion.

The house build is a school-wide effort with students participating from several areas such as carpentry, electricity, plumbing, masonry, and heating and cooling. Students work on different projects according to their specialty.

The house is expected to be finished by May 31, 2011. Habitat for Humanity is working with the school to secure a permanent site for the house.

The project is being funded in part from the school's $10,000 service learning mini-grant, which stemmed from a grant DPS received from the Michigan Community Service Commission.

In order to complete the project, additional funding is being provided by donations of equipment, supplies and cash. The estimated cost of the home is $40,000. The school hopes to have enough support to make the house build an annual project.

If you would like to donate to the project, please contact Angela Hoston-Montgomery at (313) 870-3600 or email angela.hoston@detroitk12.org.
