Rally For Education In Southwest Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - They want better schools and on Tuesday, they are making their voices heard.
Hundred of parents and students will be gathering in Southwest Detroit to brainstorm ideas on improving education in Detroit.
Organizer Bill O'Brien told WWJ a combination of forces will be coming together.
"The youth and the parents have combined forces and are actually bringing in a number of agencies and churches and immigrant rights groups from Southwest Detroit, they're bringing a number of people together to have common cause," O'Brien said.
Also expected at the event is the district's Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb, Police Chief Ralph Godbee and U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade.
"As one parent put it, when parents and youth decide to do more than baking cookies and making copies, in terms of making their schools better, this is a new day," O'Brien said. "It's the parents and students really involving themselves to bring education reform to bring quality schools, so it's a very exciting day."
The program begins at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, March 22 at Greater Apostolic Faith Temple Church, 4735 West Fort Street, Detroit, MI 48209.
