Garage Fire Spreads To Bloomfield Township Home

BLOOMFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - About $800,000 in damage was reported following a fire at Bloomfield Township home.

WWJ's Stephanie Davis reported the blaze broke out in the attached garage of a house on Washington, near Maple and Lasher.

Bloomfield Township Fire Chief David Piché said that  when man started a car in the garage, it caught on fire and then spread into the home.

Chief Piché addressed earlier reports of an explosion.

"There was some sort of explosion or loud bang when our firefighters were around the back of the house fighting the garage fire,"  Piché said.

"That could have been one of the tires on the car popping -- something to do with something that might have been stored in garage, but not a major explosion by any extent," he said.

The first level of the home was completely destroyed.

Chief Piché said the 51-year old man who started the car and his mother go out of the home safely.  No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
