Lapeer Community Schools Closed Monday

LAPEER (WWJ) - No school in Lapeer on Monday.

Classes in all Lapeer Community Schools had to be canceled because of vandalism to school buses. District Spokesman Michael Arnholt tells WWJ Newsradio 950 the tire valves were tampered with, causing air to escape from the tires.

Arnholt says they're renting extra air compressors to pump the tires back up, and he says he's grateful that no other damage was done.

"Fortunately, nobody was injured," Arnholt said. "Those buses did not go out on the road, you know ... and there's really, really a huge danger to students if the vehicles aren't operating properly. They're working hard and they're gonna be working all day to get everything back in top shape."

Arnholt says that while school had to be canceled on Monday, after-school activities will continue as planned and school will be in session on Tuesday.

Arnholt says that an incident like this has never happened in the Lapeer district before, adding that there will be efforts to heighten security.

"This is not something that happens on a regular basis in the school," Arnholt said. "And, I'm sure it's probably at the top of everybody's list right now to take a look at how we prevent this from happening again."
