54th Metro Detroit Science Fair Announces Awards

The 54th Science & Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit judging was completed on March 17, and results have been released this week.

The Senior Divison Grand Award Winners were Xiao Zhu and Lawrence Kim of Troy High School, with "MEG Study of the Default-mode Network in Patients with Schizophrenia," Allen Yuan of Detroit Country Day with "Linearly Many Faults in (n,k)-star Graphs," Goutham Kapa of Troy High School with "Converging Logarithmic Spirals on the Complex Pane," Samantha Brewer of Divine Child High School with "Solar Panel Efficiency: A More Colorful Future," Hyunjoon Song of Novi High School with "Optical Music Recognition of Printed Music Score," Rohan Arepally of Stoney Creek High School with "Catastrophic Disaster Reponse and Recovery Logistics System," and Siddhartha Jena of International Academy with "Erythrocite Dysfunction and Amelioration in Hypercholesterolemic Conditions."

More than 1,380 students from schools in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties competed at SEFMD, one of the longest running and largest science fairs in the world.

The Senior Grand Award winners will compete at the Michigan Science Fair on April 9 at Kettering University and at the International Science Fair May 8-13 in Los Angeles, Calif.

Pearl Gray of Northwestern High School will attend ISEF Los Angeles as a student observer.

A Grand Awards Reception for the students, parents and teachers is Friday, May 27, 2011 at the Detroit Athletic Club 6 p.m.

Dunckel Middle School with "Afforadable Bioplastics - An Investigation," Otis Wynn of Spain Middle School with "Corroding Race," Armani Warr of Detroit School of Arts West Langston Hughes Campus with "Volumetric Analysis of Acid in Vinegar," Jeronte Jasper of Hally Magnet Middle School with "Estrogen Mimics Effect on Fighter Fish" and Haley Clafton and Claire Wong of Meads Mill Middle School with "Smoke Detector Showdown: Photoelectric vs. Ionization."
