Joe Donovan's Detroit History: Tigers Baseball Is Born!

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Tigers' first game ever foreshadowed the wild swings of the following 110 years --- maddening blunders followed by never-say-die heroics that transformed a jeering ballpark full of fans into the happiest rooters of the new American league's opening Opening Day.

The Tigs' debut was delayed 24 hours by a rainstorm that turned the diamond into a mud pit. Three-thousand fans showed up, after the sun came out, to boo the postponement.
