Hiring Blitz Underway At McDonald's

DETROIT (WWJ) - McDonald's is hosting a hiring blitz Tuesday, looking to fill 50,000 jobs across the U.S.  -- over 2,000 of them in Michigan.

WWJ's Ron Dewey spoke with Mandy Ross, who started at McDonalds as a 14-year old crew member. Now at 26, she's manages the Milford store.

"The training program is really good. I moved easily from crew to manager. And then once I got to manager I started learning the different systems in the store. With all the training it got, it was easy to move into a store manager position," Ross said.

Ross said she gets the flexibility needed for home and family and enjoys working with the people.

McDonald's Human Resources Director Tony Tollis says working at McDonald's is not just the "You want fries with this?"  joke many people think.  He's worked there since 1977.

"As a 16-year-old just looking to put gas in my car and pay for my insurance, and I didn't think it would amount to more than that, then low and behold, I found out that there are some great opportunities at McDonald's and I've been there for 34 years, and met my wife there at 16 years old," said Tollis.

Tollis said the salaries vary based on the restaurant and the job and that having a career at McDonald's is an opportunity that shouldn't be taken lightly.

"Folks that are preparing our meals in back, cashiers, maintenance folks...management positions, all the entry level positions; could be part-time some are full-time," says Tollis.

Tollis advises job seekers to come prepared and to look the part of someone who is looking for a job in a serious way. Not someone who is just coming in to fill out an application for the sake of filling one out but as a person really looking to become employed.

Those interested in applying for an available position can visit their local McDonald's or apply online at www.McDonalds.com/Careers. Open House hiring event times will vary per restaurants.
