Mayor Bing "Concerned" About Agreement To Avoid State Financial Takeover

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit Mayor Dave Bing is expressing concerns about a proposal to enter into a consent agreement to avoid a state financial takeover.

Even though the plan -- put on the table by Council President Pro Tem Gary Brown -- would give the mayor sweeping powers like those of an emergency financial manager, Bing says it could also be opening up a can of worms.

"It could be. I mean we've gotta really take a hard look at this, um, my goal is to manage this as best we can; have the city council and the pension board, unions," Bing told WWJ's City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas. We need to work together down here and not be dependent upon anybody else. To me that's a last ditch effort and that's the last thing I would wanna do."

Some city council members are expressing stiff opposition to their colleague's plan.
