Detroit History: They Lit Up Our Lives!

DETROIT (WWJ) - One hundred twenty-five years ago, Detroit rode the cutting edge of technology when the "Edison Illuminating Company" was formed to make electricity for businesses and homes replacing old-tech kerosene lamps and flickering gas lights.

"Edison Illuminating" evolved into "Detroit Edison," named after the onetime Detroiter whose light bulb fueled the demand for more and more voltage and whose most famous employee quit his Edison job to start his own Ford Motor Company.
