Girls Get Glam For Free At 4th Annual Belle Of The Prom Dress Give Away

DETROIT (WWJ) - The 4th Annual Belle of the Prom Dress Give Away is Saturday from 11 until 1 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club on Detroit's west side.

Wayne County Commissioner Alisha Bell said there are more than two-hundred slightly used prom dress available for teens who are welcome from all across the tri-county area.

"Any high school girl is eligible to come. The dresses are absolutely free. We've got at least 200 dresses donated from different stores across the cities from ladies who have dresses that they've only worn once or twice. We've also giving away shoes, purses and accessories," Bell said.

According to Bell, the annual prom dress giveaway helps ease the financial burden on parents, especially with Proms scheduled so close to graduation time.

"So they don't have to do all of it. At least the one part can be taken care of and sometimes the dress is, of course, the most expensive thing. So this just eases the burden on the parents," Bell said. "The girls can come with their parents and pick out a dress. In past years it's been very lovely to see even fathers come with their daughters."

Proof of income is not required to get a free prom dress.

Bell said they will also accept donations of slightly used Prom dresses and accessories at the same location, same time.

The event takes place from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm Saturday, May 7 at the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit, 16500 Tireman St. (click for map)
