After nearly a yearlong courtship, Tom Gores is set to take official ownership of the Pistons this week.
Gores inherits a team with a coach no one is sure will survive the transition, along with disgruntled players who’ve voiced their displeasure with the recent downturn — evidenced by an embarrassing boycott in February.
The fan base, once among the most passionate and knowledgeable in the NBA, has dwindled. The vivid memory of the wild crowds that made the trek up I-75 to Auburn Hills every spring in anticipation of postseason success has turned into chants of “MVP” for opposing superstars.
So, while Gores arrives with fervor, energy and hopefully a competitive will to win, there are some issues that surely demand his attention.
