Business Leaders Share Turnaround Stories At Policy Conference

MACKINAC ISLAND (WWJ) - Some business leaders at the Mackinac Policy Conference are set to describe their own turnaround experiences and how they could be applied to struggling cities in Michigan.

Reporting from the island, WWJ's Vicki Thomas caught up with co-founder and CEO of American Axle Richard Dauch, who spoke of his turnaround success alongside the CEO's of DMC and Meritor. What's his strategy?

"I call them the three R's... restructure, resize and recover, and we're doing just exactly what we said," Dauch said. "Well, anything I've always said, if you have no pain you'll have no gain."

And his strategy seems to be working.

"Our Three Rivers, Michigan plant, which just by the way was voted by Industry Week one of the 10 best plants in North America, that includes U.S., Mexico and Canada, and for the fourth straight year one of the best places to work on the western side of Michigan," Dauch said.

Hundreds of Michigan business leaders and politicians will be on Mackinac Island for the annual policy conference, which kicked off Wednesday and runs for three days.

Governor Rick Snyder opened the conference touting his own accomplishments thus far. (More on this).
