Mom May Face Charges After Son Brings Gun To School

MACOMB COUNTY (WWJ) - The Macomb County Sheriff's Department is working with the county prosecutor to decide if a Mount Clemens mom will face charges after her seven-year-old son took her loaded gun to Martin Luther King Elementary school on Friday.

Sheriff Tony Wickersham says it's lucky no one was hurt since the boy gave the gun to another student before the teacher confiscated it.  "I mean you got a seven-year-old passing a loaded gun to another seven-year-old ... a second grader ... just passing that gun ... taking it out .. it's loaded ... an inexperienced kid not knowing what they're doing . That gun could have discharged and somebody could have been hurt or killed," said Wickersham.

What's the message for parents who have guns?

"Kids are curious and if they see a gun laying there, they are going to think it's something they want to pick it up, and play with. Again, a loaded gun is a very dangerous thing, you know we've got to keep them out of the hands of our children," said Wickersham.

Wickersham stated the boy had gotten the gun out of his mother's dresser at home.

Wickersham said that it's important for adults to secure their weapons. "Keep 'em out of the reach of children. Put them in a lock box, but that's just common sense," he said.
