Punny Airline Ad Offers “Fares Too Hard To Resist”

ROMULUS (WWJ) – One airline that flies out of Detroit Metro Airport is trying to capitalize on the “sexting” scandal involving New York Congressman Anthony Weiner.

Spirit Airlines has begun running an ad on its website promoting “The Weiner Sale”, asking “Have you seen our weiner?” and offering “fares too hard to resist”, starting nine dollars each way. The ad shows a picture of a hot dog.

University of Detroit Mercy marketing Professor Mike Bernacchi says, yeah, it crosses the line.

“These type of promotions, generally speaking, are very short-lived,” Bernacchi said.

“But, you know what? They accomplish what they set out to do, and that’s to get some publicity, to get some acknowledgement, no matter how absurd it is,” he said.

“The objective is to get Spirit’s name … to get the brand’s name out there, to get folks to react to it, get a reaction from Spirit, etcetera … you know, because that gives it a little bit more than just one news cycle maybe and if you can keep it going for a while and certainly the fact that the congressman himself is keeping this thing going,” Bernacchi said.

In an email to WWJ Newsradio 950, Spirit confirmed that the ad is legit.

Bernacchi says the only way to get rid of this type of advertising is to complain and not fly the airline. You may recall Spirit pulled an ad campaign a few years ago “The Hunt for Hoffa” when investigators were looking for his remains in Milford.

Corrupt politicians using taxpayer money to solicit girls, yet another violation of our rights. Add it to the list of gov’t violations of our rights:
They violate the 1st Amendment by placing protesters in cages, banning books like “America Deceived II” and censoring the internet.
They violate the 2nd Amendment by confiscating guns.
They violate the 4th and 5th Amendment by molesting airline passengers.
They violate the entire Constitution by starting undeclared wars for foreign countries.

Another loopy loop. The Government did it huh? I’ve worked for the Gubmint for over 21 years, they can’t keep a secret, they sell them to the highest bidder, see clinton bout that one.

Understand nothing is going to change until you turn off the fascist propaganda called CBS Journalism. CBS sucks the teet of CAFR and therefore do not dare speak of it. The original poster is spot on, but missed a few problems because of being limited to 2000 characters, and you make joke of it.

The bottom line here is Just like Palin, this idiot Weiner can’t be trusted either. It’s a NATIONAL SECURITY problem. But just keep playing the same old left right paradigm game and enjoy the anarchy which will follow when people get hungry. At that time, You will just call them terrorists.. The real terrorists are the officials who broke their oath of office and replaced the US CONSTITUTION with the PATRIOT ACT.

Would the lob college professor object to one if it were about Sen Craig?

  3. justshutupandobey says:

I love this ad. Congressman Weiner deserves more than mere public humiliation but it is a decent start.

  4. Sam says:

Why complain, the airline is only capitalizing on a politician’s stupidity. If you want a private life stay off Facebook and Twitter; don’t punish the airlines for clever advertising

  5. Indyracefan says:

The problem is that we have lost out sense of humor.

    1. nother1down says:

Problem is we’re losing articulate energetic promising young men.

      1. ew-3 says:

Who would that be ? You can’t seriously mean weiner.

  6. Pro says:

I don’t understand why a business would denigrate a US congressional representative. Sounds like mean spirited Republican politics. I am sure those girls were plants or may have even worked for the tea party.

    1. still laughing says:

“I don’t understand why a business would denigrate a US congressional representative”
NOW THAT, is a funny comment. I think congress does a pretty good job of denigrating themselves.

    2. gatekeeper96740 says:

Spoken like a true brain-dead liberal. Why don’t you put down the Saul Alansky book and get a real book, like Lincoln Unmasked by Thomas J. DiLorenzo

    3. David says:

Pull your head out of your posterior. This twit denigrated himself. Or, hey, if you don’t think so, perhaps you wouldn’t mind me sending a similar picture of mine to your young daughter? Ya, didn’t think so.

    4. Fred Fredsky says:

You sound like a mean spirited Democrat! May I assume you are a plant? Working for MoveOn?

    5. Brassia says:

Yep, those skillful republicans and tea party people – look how successful they were in getting Clinton’s zipper open and even provide Monica’s mouth right there under the desk in Oral Office…..
My admiration to those right wing conspiracy group who is able to operate liberal’s family jewels…..wihtout the owner even being aware of it!!!!

Correct me if I’m wrong but it sounded to me like Pro was being sarcastic.

  7. ANONTDH says:

    Dear Ms. Pelosi,
Thank you for your announcement of investigation into Weinergate scandal by the United States congress.
At the same time, please check the computers and telephone logs of all of the politicians, including congressmen and senators. You will be surprised to find out that Mr. Weiner is not the ONLY one who has done what he did.
It will be appropriate to get rid of all of them, who are guilty of doing the same things that Mr. Weiner did and have a clean house and senate all over once again and for good.
Wishing you good luck in this venture and many more to come, God willing.
May God Almighty help all of us, Amen.

    1. p3orion says:

The only reason Nancy Pelosi wants an investigation is that it would take nearly a year, and in the meantime Weiner is right there voting on the left side of every issue. Without an investigation (and is one really needed at this point?) he’ll be gone in days.

  8. david h says:

Yeah, great sale, but the airline sucks.

    1. Southie says:

According to his Ms. Weiss tweets, Weiner was ecstatic about that.

  9. Richard says:

    Wow
    That’s pretty tacky.

  10. dan says:

This is naked opportunism. I bet it’s based on polling voters.

And $9 one way?!? They’ll lose their shirt!

  11. Bully says:

I’ll go “all the way” for $9 bucks.

  12. Rex says:

No, Dan, they’ll losr their PANTS! (ROFL)

  13. Doc says:

Wiener Sale….does this mean Spirit is lying about the cheap fare?

  14. jack says:

Weiner claimed that he was hacked and then, once the implications of that statement were realized, he partially walked back the accusation. That is what made it news.
A sitting congressman’s email account being hacked, not hacked.

Of course the content wasn’t very pretty either.

At least they used the slogan, “Too hard to resist” rather than prices that might have been, let’s say, “hard to beat”.

  18. Fred Fredsky says:

They just HAD to interview a professor who is authorized to know where the line is, what is not, and what is, over the line.

  19. Ranterdon says:

How about interviewing a REAL MARKETING PROFESSIONAL and not a college professor who has never run a successful ad campaign…sheesh

  20. John says:

    That’s funny!

  21. SantaFeSteve says:

It is a shame that Rep Weiner does not even know how to pronounce his own name correctly. In German when there are two vowels the emphasis in on the second vowel.

So his name should be pronounced whiner …to be nice wine-er.

True he his a hot dog and too stupid to even know how to pronounce his name.

    1. Brassia says:

No matter how he pronounces his pathetic name (it suits him to a T) -he is the most arrogant, disrespectful, obnoxious visious attack dog and not only sooo very ugly , he has the ugly mouth whenever he had been invited to answer questions, give an interview ir sinmpy speak about the current issues.
He constantly interrups, attacks and denigrate anyone who is unfortunate enough to have to talk to him…
I really enjoy seeing him with his tail between his legs for a change , pardon the pund.

    2. Sam says:

You may also recall that a W is pronounced the way we pronounce the letter V. So, following German pronunciation, it should be vine-er. Don’t criticize his pronunciation when you can’t even get it right. Besides, people ARE free to say their names any way they want. I only say my name the way I do because it’s how I learned to say it as a kid.

  22. db says:

Not in any kinky sort of way by any means, but all this talk has me headed to the fridge to fix a hot dog. Seriously. Where’s the pickle relish?

  23. flashman says:

Typical “news” ploy, call an “expert”. Want to bet if this ‘marketing professor” every ran a successful business? Plus, this is the only guy the newspaper could find? A loser professor from an obscure college? And we are to treat his sacred opinion with reverence (or even respect for that matter).

PLEASE, the airline did not cross any line with this ad; they did something clever and funny. More power to them.

And the congressman in question: if he were honorable, and actually taking responsibility for his acts, he would resign.

  24. WilliamPenn says:

Teddy Kennedy was one of the most despicable humans to ever suck oxygen. He assaulted and denigrated women for 45 years. He was responsible for the horrible death of one of them The Dems elevated him to God-status. Do you REALLY think they’ll do anything to Weiner? Are you daft?

    1. flashman says:

Weiner is no Kennedy, and the news media of 40 – 50 years ago is not the news media of today.

Kennedy had his family, vast wealth, and his brothers recent deaths to provide cover and sympathy. Weiner has none of this. The news media also covered for Kennedy – there were few opposing news outlets. Today there are many and the old guard just can’t “fool the folks” as they once could.

So, yes, I believe they (the Democrat leadership) will DO something to take out Weiner, but I hope they don’t. He has lost all credibility, and is a laughing stock. I hope he stays in congress. It will only help the Republicans.

  25. jasperddbgghost says:

With fares this low, it’s almost like cheating!

With his wife working for Hilldog, I bet she probably played wife swap. It’s anything goes for libs….course I think Weiner got the short end of that stick.

  26. Wang Newton says:

“Hard to resist” at such a small price. Perfect!

  29. Doug says:

Really dumb, but that’s how the media is going these days. It’s amazing how good old comedies from the early 90s look now. Now everyone on television talks like a moron. They give stupid award show acceptance speeches and people go on television talking about gay marriages and global warming like they know what they are talking about and swearing like a moron. Nobody seems to care about how bad the economy is and how British Pretroleum has destroyed part of the Gulf of Mexico’s environment. Stuff just doesn’t look that good right now.

  33. p3orion says:

It’s a great fare ($9 each way round-trip) but it’s from frikkin’ DETROIT! If you were flying out of Detroit, would you want to have to go BACK?
