Talk Of Lawsuit To Strike Down Power Of Emergency Manager

DETROIT (WWJ) - A broad coalition of attorneys and labor leaders are preparing a lawsuit to challenge Michigan's powerful emergency financial manager law.

Detroit Councilwoman JoAnn Watson says the group has been meeting for week's preparing the lawsuit.

"Protect our interests against any Emergency Manager coming into this city which we have the right to govern and run, so I'd like you to come and stand with us...on the 22nd," said Watson.

Watson says the Dream Team includes AFSCME, AFL.CIO, the National Lawyers Guild, and the Sugar Law Firm. Watson says a rally is planned for 11 a.m. on June 22nd in Downtown Detroit for public support.

The law gives the Emergency Manager the power to fire elected officials and dissolve union contracts and sell off city assets to balance the budget with no oversight.
