DETROIT (WWJ) – Friday, June 17 is the 136th Anniversary of Sanders and to celebrate, Detroit’s original ice cream shop is offering $1.36 Ice Cream Cones all day.

Fred Sanders was a child when his family emigrated from Germany to the US. He returned to Germany in his adult years to study the confectionary trade.

He then settled in Illinois where he started his first business in Chicago. After the Great Fire of 1871 burnt his business and most of the city to the ground, he traveled to the next largest city, Detroit.

The bustling Woodward Ave. in Detroit was where Fred started Sanders Candy on June 17th, 1875. Sanders grew to be one of Detroit’s largest companies, and Fred became one of Detroit’s most prominent businessmen at the turn of the century.

More than a century later, Sanders is growing, opening new stores and expanding their historical American brand across the country.

They have introduced many new products to their line, but the classics still continue; dessert toppings, bumpy cake, hot fudge cream puffs and their fine quality chocolates.

So, on the Sanders’ 136th Anniversary, head to one of eight Metro Detroit Sanders Ice Cream Shops to celebrate with a $1.36 ice cream cones, regularly $2.99.
