Now Here's A Good Problem

Rob Sanford

The Tigers homestand is over and they hit the road as the leaders in the Central Division. It feels good just to say it out loud. The team seems to have worked out the kinks they experienced earlier this season. The starting pitching is more than just competent, with the exception of Brad Penny, who can't find the key to being constant. But here's the deal...many have moaned about having Magglio Ordonez back from the DL and soon Brandon Inge will be coming back as well. It means Jim Leyland will have more tough line up decisions to make. But instead of seeing it as something bad...just think about how many teams would LOVE to have Detroit's "problem."  Thanks to the young guns coming up big so far...it gives Leyland a ton more options plus when and if a player goes into a slump or is injured..they have someone to fill in.

As time goes on, I'm less and less enamored with interleague play. Detroit has no natural rival in the National League, and aside from the Cubs, Cardinals, or Giants, I really don't care about seeing them play other teams. If playing fewer NL games would mean more games with Eastern Divison..then I'm all for it. I also agree with Jim Leyland that by going without a designated hitter, it gives the National League an unfair advantage, although the Tigers have had fairly good success anyway. I think its time to re-think the whole thing.
