Snyder Wants To Guarantee 2 Years Of College For DPS Graduates

DETROIT (WWJ) - Governor Rick Snyder wants to recreate the Kalamazoo Promise in Detroit. Snyder says he is tapping into the business and philanthropic communities to raise money to guarantee a two-year college scholarship for Detroit Public Schools graduates.

"We're early in that process.  We have people already interested. We've actually been contacted by people who want to participate, whether they be foundations, philanthropic organizations, whether it's individuals," Snyder told reporters, Monday.

"I mean, it's great to see people wanting to be part of the solution. They've just needed a vehicle to go do it in," Snyder said,

Snyder is working with DPS Emergency Manager Roy Roberts on the details, hoping to eventually expand the program.

"We're trying to crunch those numbers now ... We know that we've got enough commitments or quasi-commitments that we can handle the two years. But to get to four, there's a lot more work that has to be done," he said.

Monday's announcement came as Gov. Snyder stopped in Detroit to announce plans to create a statewide authority to manage under-performing schools across Michigan. (More on this, here).
