Matt Dery's Daily Update 7-1-11

A busy day 1 of NHL free agency, the Red Wings do not land Jaromir Jagr nor do they get Ed Jovanovski. Jagr instead lands with the Philadelphia Flyers, inking a 1 year and reported $3.3 million deal. Both the Wings and Penguins pulling their offers from Jagr earlier today, Pens offered $2 million. He nearly doubled that from Philly. Florida Panthers reportedly ink Jovanovski to a 4 year deal.

Wings do retain Patrick Eaves, Jonathan Ericcson and Drew Miller, Eaves gets $6 million over 3 years, Ericsson get reportedly $10 million over 3 years and Miller gets a 2 year contract for just over $1.6 million.

The Red Wings have also signed Mike Commodore for a 1 year $1 million deal.

Tigers wrap up interleague play this weekend with 3 games against the San Francisco Giants who are also in first place. Detroit catches a break as they will not face Tim Lincecum or Matt Cain. Tonight lefty Madison Bumgarner on the hill against Brad Penny, Casper Wells is hitting 2nd again tonight against the lefty.
