Detroit Cracking Down On Parking Violators

DETROIT (WWJ) – The city of Detroit is gearing up for a big crackdown on parking violators.

WWJ’s Ron Dewey says drivers may want to keep a roll of quarters in their consoles. Starting Friday, meter readers will be out on the streets with a vengeance, scratching out parking tickets until 10:00 at night Tuesday through Friday. They’ll also be on the job Saturdays, 2 until 10, as opposed to their current quitting time of 6pm. This is all to raise another $10 million for the cash-starved city, on the backs of violators who owe the city $35 million in unpaid parking tickets, dating back to 2004. City officials say this fair and not different from what other cities in the region already do in their downtown areas.

Some business owners wonder how the city can attract downtown visitors if they’re also ready to slap parking tickets on their windshields.

If the city really wanted to crackdown on parking violators. They would be on Dix Ave. Between Lonyo and Vernor writing tickets for the people ILLEGALLY PARKED ALONG Patton Park. They spent over a million dollars renovating the park and building a huge park lot for the park that NO ONE uses. They park along Dix Ave. where it is clearly posted NO PARKING. THere are times on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday when you can not even get through due to all the parked and double parked vehicles. Start writing tickets there. That will be over 100 tickets a day.

Why do people think they can park illegally anyway?? Just pay the 50 cents to 3.00 or what ever…. its a lot cheaper than having to pay a ticket. Detroit should do what Philadelphia does… put the “boots” on the wheels, you cannot drive away until fine is paid!. Why is it ALWAYS some one else’s fault?? In today’s society nobody wants to take responsibility for their OWN actions. With all the “unpaid” parking tickets….. they have all the info on the ticket……. Detroit should put a “Lien” on the vehicles!
people just need to “man or woman” up to their actions pay the meter or pay the fine.

If Detroit needs help with enforcement strategies, it should contact Ann Arbor City Hall. For years, the standing joke in Ann Arbor is that the city’s welcome wagon is a tow truck.

The city is owed 35 million in unpaid tickets? Collect the fines or put whoever woh owes to work cleaning up the city. The morons who run the city have no
    clul.

  5. Michael Farmar says:

Why can’t they appoint collection agencies to recover those fines. You are the government for crying out loud. If credit card companies are doing it, why can’t you ? This city should be run by marines not ex-basketball players.

why cant the city crack down on real crime like murder and drugs and gangs
thats what the police get paid to do isn’t it

  7. Graz says:

It’s probably not as easy as it would seem. For collecting unpaid tickets, there are jurisdictional issues that come into play that prevent just using a collection agency to go after the unpaid ones. And as for booting the unpaid cars, they have to find them first. It’s a big city and if the person doesn’t live in the city, it would be hard to find their vehicle.

I HAD MY PLATE STOLEN,THE THEIF PUT IT ON ANOTHER CAR DUMPED THE CAR IN THE BEAUTIFUL CITY OF DETROIT THEY PROCEEDED TO WRIGHT 12 TICKETS ON THIS CAR,1 YEAR LATER INFORMED ME I OWED THEM 750.00 BECAUSE THE PLATE WAS MINE I ASKED DIDNT THEY RUN THE PLATE AFTER THE FIRST 2 OR3 TO CK AND SEE IF THE CAR WAS EVEN LEGAL? LAQUEEFA INFORMED ME IT WASNT THEIR CONCERN JUST PAY THE FINES,I CONTACTED PARKING,MAYORS OFFICE,POLICE CHIEF,NOBODY CARES WHICH IS EXACTLY WHATS WRONG WITH DETROIT,THE “PEOPLE” THAT RUN THE CITY HAVE DONE NOTHING BUT RAPE AND PILAGE EVERYTHING THEY COULD GET FROM IT AND NOW WANT THE STATE TO BAIL THEM OUT SO THEY CAN “GET THEIRS AGAIN” I SAY BRING IN OUTSIDE PEOPLE TO RUN IT AND KICK ALL EXISTING OMMITEE AND MAYOR OUT
