Chrysler Works To Identify Plant Workers Caught Drinking

TRENTON (WWJ) - Workers at Chrysler's Trenton plant who were caught by TV cameras drinking and smoking outside a UAW hall face possible suspension without pay.

Company spokesman Ed Garsten, reading an official statement from the automaker, called this latest incident "disturbing."

"What's so distressing about this situation is that, for the most part, the 50,000 Chrysler employees that work across the company are hardworking, dedicated individuals who are committed to building high-quality products for our customers," Garsten said.

Garsten said these suspensions are just the beginning.

"While steps have been taken to raise employee awareness, more decisive action may be required to make sure that this behavior does not continue," he said.

Several workers were caught by Fox 2 News cameras, smoking and drinking in a UAW hall parking lot, while on a break or before going to work. Chrysler officials are still working to identify those seen in the video.

This follows a separate incident last September, when Fox 2 TV cameras caught Chrysler workers on video drinking beer, and possibly smoking marijuana on their lunch break at a park near the Jefferson North Plant on Detroit's east side.  Fifteen workers were suspended.
