Somerset Collection Comes To Downtown Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - A block party in the heart of Detroit to celebrate the opening of a Somerset Collection... right downtown.

Music, champagne, hors d'oeuvres and hundreds of people packed into a block on Woodward Ave., just a block up from Campus Martius Park for the opening of the Somerset Collection City Loft Shop. "This was kind of our brain child to try to bring a little retail and bring an idea of what retail could be again in the city of Detroit. And bring some excitement and continue to extend the Somerset brand," says Nathan Forbes, managing partner of the Forbes company which owns and manages the Somerset Collection in Troy.

The upscale shops of the Somerset Collection will offer their wares in Detroit throughout Sunday - opening only one weekend a month as sort of a test-run. A company spokesperson says the stores will locate temporarily in the Lofts of Merchants Row along Woodward north of Campus Martius. The items for sale include jewelry and designer handbags.

Of the new retail endeavor, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says, "Hopefully we'll get a lot of people that will come out and support this because if we can get retail back downtown in Detroit, we've got a winner."

The shops will return in August and September.
