Man Dies After Golf Cart Flips Over

OXFORD (WWJ) – Police say a 43-year-old man is dead after flipping his golf cart while playing in a league at the Copper Hills Golf Course in Oxford.

Eric Ostdiek, of Troy, was driving a 2007 Club Car golf cart on the course Thursday just after 7 p.m. with a 41-year-old Macomb Township resident in the passenger seat.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, Ostdiek drove through the tee box and started down a hill to retrieve an errant ball. He saw a steep drop off ahead and attempted to turn the wheel sharply. The cart rolled over and landed on top of Ostdiek, severely injuring himself and the passenger.

Both men were transported to Crittenton Hospital. Ostdiek was pronounced dead while en route to the hospital. The other man’s condition is unknown.

Ostdiek was the boys’ golf coach at Southfield Lathrup High School. He had been an employee with the district for 14 years.

Investigators say Ostdiek was driving the cart too fast. It is unknown at this time if alcohol was involved in the crash, which remains under investigation.

  • Suzanne Lanctot

I am seriously in shock by the last paragraph of this news report! Why on earth would you post “it is unknown if alcohol was involved” My husband was on the course last night playing on another league. Every single man on that course was shocked and saddened by this. Now imagine if you are his FAMILY, FRIENDS, STUDENTS, Stricken with grief and seeing this article. This UNKNOW INFORMATION is offensive and has NO place in this article! I feel you owe this family a POSTED APPOLOGY!!

    • Traci A.

Susan, I can tell you as a food and beverage manager at a golf course, it’s not out of the question to mention this. Maybe HE wasn’t a drinker but I can tell you there are MANY golfers who do. If it was a motor vehicle accident the same comment would have been made. A responsible golfer should not be driving fast, making sharp turns or abusing the rules of golf let alone driving on a tee box with a cart.

      • Witness

Just to clear the air for all of the misinformed. First, he was not driving fast as the investigator alleges. Second, he was between tee boxes. Third, who says you can’t make sharp turns? On this particular course, if you don’t make sharp turns you’ll be off the path and in the woods!

    • sstoddart

The fact that it is unknown at this time if alcohol was involved in the crash was included in a release provided to us by the Police. Thank you for your comment.

      • Suzanne Lanctot

Regardless of the fact it was “included” in the Police Report does not require you to POST IT! Have more sensitivity in the future when posting articles of this nature, remembering how statements such as this are very hurtful to the loved ones…………

      • Mark

I agree with Ms Lanctot, this kind of “reporting” is like publishing a disclaimer with every male child birth annoncement, “In 20 years, he might be charged with rape!”

    • Sam

It’s not CBS’s place to make sure you’re not offended by everything they write. Grow up and stop whining.

      • Suzanne Lanctot

Again, Shocked! Did you know that all other reporting’s on this accident had the good sense to ONLY state” the accident is under investigation”….. “Grow up and stop whining” you must be employed by CBS to speak so callused. I am seeing firsthand the people this has touched, my husband being one of them. Get a HEART!

      • J. G.

You sir (or maam), are a doucebag. I don’t have the time or energy to explain what a jerk you are. I’m sure everyone that’s ever met you already knows this.

    • bob

as a golfer, I can tell you that alcohol is a factor in over 90% of what goes on on a golf course, good or bad.

      • Kbalz

This is true, Suzanne, read this and shut it.

    • J. G.

You are a liar and a loser.

  • Suzanne Lanctot

  • Jason Wanecek

    Ms. Lanctot,

As a person who knew Eric and knows his wife and 2 children, thank you for your commnets. I agree wholeheartedly.

  • Suzanne Lanctot

Jason, my husband Keith and I are very sorry about the loss of your friend Eric. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all that loved him especially his Family.

  • Adkins

Clearly suzanne doesn’t read much news. Its not cbs’s job to be sensitive. Its their job to report the facts. The fact is alcohol may or may not have been a factor in this tragic accident. They are in no way implying that he was or wasn’t drinking. Read any other article about an ongoing investigation into an accident and you’ll read the same sentence. Its protocol. Don’t blame WWJ reporters for doing their jobs.

    • J.G.

Clearly, you have no class. Simply making the comment you did shows you have no compassion for your fellow humans.

    • Kbalz

I completely agree, when I read the first few paragraphs.. as a golfer myself, I assumed he was drunk. CBS took that assumption out of my mind for now.

  • Adkins

Look its not about sympathy or compassion. This is a horrible accident that clearly involved a wonderful human being who gave back to the community ten fold. I feel for his family and friends, I really do. But that being said doesn’t change the fact that alcohol MIGHT have come into play. Nothing is being accused or implied. For goodness sake.

    • lexicondevil

Seriously – as sad as this is, I don’t see anything wrong with this article. Not everybody who reads the article knows you personally, and I’ve (and I’m sure you have, too) read thousands of similar reports that say the exact same thing.

Would you have taken such a strong opinion, if you didn’t know this family, first hand? It’s not like they said anything to effect of: It is suspected that he was drinking/drunk. It’s just standard procedure for a journalist to ask these questions, and to report.

I really don’t mean to be harsh. I just think you may be taking it a little personally. My condolences on your loss.

    • J. G.

Since you’re big on facts, the only fact to this point is that the investigators don’t know, so why even mention alcohol? Always the same story, guilty until proven innocent. Makes me sick.

      • Kbalz

Did you even read the article? He drove a golf cart over the tee box down hill at full speed.. Any golfer would assume that guy was drunk.

  • Peter Bridges

I love drinking and riding in golf carts.. never knew it was deadly.. Maybe there should be seatbelts in these things.. rest in peace buddy

  • Gooch MaPooch

Actually, it was just reported that alcohol was found in his system. He was legally intoxicated. so suck on that suzanna…

  • Intelligent George

This is to Suzanne, who clearly is ignorant in this respect. Whenever there is a motor vehicle accident where it is self-inflicted, the police and news correspondents are to include in their reporting if any alcohol was found to be present at the scene. Since this fella decided to single-handedly remove himself from the gene pool (idiot), the police and this news correspondent are correct.

    • Bakerssecret

Why the name calling when obviously this lady is hurting? Ignorant is not defined by having empathy for the family and friends of this man but what Ignorant is the lack of compassion for your fellow man as clearly displayed by YOU GEORGE.

  • ty webb

Flipping a cart isn’t easy. Driving through a tee box is a bold thing to do. There is a 99% chance this guy was drinking and/or drunk.

  • Jerry

LEAVE THIS POOR FAMILY ALONE!!! I don’t know of ANY law that says the print and/or broadcast media MUST include reporting of alcohol use. The police report including it is understandable. Also, there is no directive that says they must even report it or ANY story. What about all the GOOD stories about saving lives, helping others, charitable occurances etc. You dont see them, do you. Its THIER decision what to report. I believe that If its not SEBSATIONAL or won’t get ratings, leave it alone., is the MANTRA of this organization. Listen to or look at all the over-exagerated weather stories.

  • Cousin

I believe that everyone writing on this post has lost sight of the big picture. Eric is part of my family and we are all shocked and saddened at the tragic events. Please keep in mind that as you post these comments on this page, his wife, children or other family could be reading this. Thank you and we love and miss you Eric!

    • Suzanne Lanctot

Cousin, we are truly sorry for your family’s loss. As I wrote in my first post, my husband was there last night and all of the league players are upset and shaken by this. I actually just told a friend of mine I hope the family does not read any of this hateful speech. Again, we are truly sorry for the loss of Eric. From what I have heard about him, he was amazing man with so much to offer the youth. God Bless your family and please know that many prayers are being said for ALL OF YOU……..

  • Bakerssecret

Now why would you make such a reply? I see where the childish tribble comes from. Shouldn’t there be an age limit or an IQ test before allowing this to happen?

  • Dee

This, from Regardless of what you call [the tee box], you must treat this area of cropped grass as gingerly as you would treat the putting green. I.e., Never drive a motorized cart onto or across it. Never pull a hand cart across it, either.

  • SMHN

Wow! These statements are cruel and childish, being said at the hardest time in this families life? Where is the humanity and empathy? This was HORRIBLE FREAK ACCIDENT and his family and students are going to spend many months, and years grieving. It is obvious that he was a man of compassion just knowing what hs profession was. It takes a special person to teach. I am appauled at the people who do not have details and have made assumptions. Shame on you! Keep your thoughts to yourself. You should have learned this in 3rd grade, if you don’t have anything nice to say, say nothing at all. My husband was also on the course during this “accident”, from what he heard and saw this was not a man that was out to drink, he was out to enjoy a game of golf! Hence the him being a golf coach. God Bless.

  • JP

He was probably smashed. I would rather flip a golf cart because I was drunk rather than stupid. If he was sober, then he gets a Dawrin Award.

  • Jezebel

Regardless of how it happened, or whether he was drunk or not, it’s still a tragedy. Knowing he was drunk or sober doesn’t make it hurt any less for the people who will miss him the most. My condolences to his friends and family. At least he was GOLFING! A nice, relaxing, fun last day for him.

  • Forrest Gump

    Stupid is as stupid does.

To the family and friends, I must say that this incident particularly strike me sad! I have been on a great many adventures in my days, but never realized how close to death each have taken me. It reminds me how precious my time is and how important it is to be there for my wife and kids. Eric must have been a good man to be taken in such fashion, and so soon. My sincere condolences… Especially to Eric’s wife and kids. May it bring you some solace to know through Eric’s connections while short have made lasting impressions. Ones that brought this news my way. Ostdiek’s you are in my families thoughts and prayers.

  • snakeair

I am so glad they mentioned alcohol in this article. This is the real world folks and if you can’t take the media reporting then don’t post a comment. Do you really think by mentioning that CBS should not post the alocohol comment that they will stop this in the future?

Grow up you babIES. I play golf a couple times a month and use the golf cart. I know the course’s that i play on like the back of my hand and know when to slow down and when to floor it for the hell of it. There had to be beer involved or the drive of the cart was talking to his buddy and not paying attention to his surroundings. Watch the golf course will get sued for something that had no control over. The drive of the cart was at fault for not paying attention. Speeding on the golf cart is a big no no because you could actually ruin the grass on the golf course. I hope this guy was drunk and i hope this story makes it on CNN.

    • Witness

This is to snakeair, I’ll bet you wouldn’t run your mouth and call people babies to their faces. Many of you hide behind your keyboards making these comments because you know you’ll never have to deal with what you say. COWARD!

The fact is this country has freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Many people died for those rights. Just cause what is said is hurtful doesnt give you the right to tell someone they shouldnt say it. Thats what the report said and the people have the right to know everything in it. Maybe you should move to a country that doesnt have those rights if you dont like it. Just cause this time it effects you personally doesnt give you the right to dictate the law that so many people died to conserve. The law is the law and the door swings both ways, sometimes what is said is not to friendly or offensive sometimes it brings joy but you are a hypocrite if your going to tell someone what they should or shouldnt say just cause it offends you. Im sorry for your loss many of us have had losses, but that does not give us the right to tell people what they can and cant say if it does then where does it stop. Ive had a few people in my family die in wars that were had to conserve these rights and ill be damned if we just toss those rights aside cause we might hurt someones feelings. You obviously take those rights for granite and prob wouldnt if you seen what other countrys people go through who do not have those rights. I feel sorry for you but that doesnt change the facts.

  • golf galexy

Definitely believe that which you said. Your favourite justification seemed to be on the internet the simplest thing to have in mind of. I say to you, I definitely get irked while other folks consider concerns that they just don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the highest and outlined out the whole thing with no need side effect , people can take a signal. Will probably be again to get more. Thank you
