Matt Dery’s Daily Update 8-12-11

The preseason opener is here after all of the waiting and uncertainty with the NFL season. The Lions will play some football tonight meeting up with the Bengals at Ford Field.

Interesting comments today made by former Vikings wideout Cris Carter. The ESPN analyst says Calvin Johnson is a very good receiver but not great. Carter also says Johnson is not in his top 6 in the NFL, adding that Johnson’s route running is not worthy of top 5.

Ohio State officials and ex coach Jim Tressel meeting today with the NCAA committee of infractions for a hearing in Indy. A ruling is not expected for a few weeks. Tressel did release a statement apologizing again to Ohio State fans, staff and players.

Tigers take their road show to Baltimore tonight. So far Detroit is 3-3 on this 9 game road trip. Brad Penny makes a rare night start for the Tigers who is opposed by righty Alfredo Simon.

The “Worm” gets his due tonight, Dennis Rodman will be inducted into the basketball hall of fame.
