RiverWalkers Club Welcomes 60+ Crowd

They arrive by the hundreds to stroll the Detroit Riverfront. They're members of the DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital RiverWalkers club, which was formed four years ago to provide metro-area senior citizens the opportunity to stay fit by walking.

The RiverWalkers Club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays each week from June through August. More than 200 seniors joined the first year.

The club's numbers are now nearing 1,000. To become a member of the club you must be at least 60 years of age. Many members are in their 70's.

In addition to walking and socializing with friends old and new, the RiverWalkers Club offers members the opportunity for free health screenings and to participate in programs like chair exercises and senior driving safety. The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy supports the RiverWalkers Club by providing free snacks and prizes.

From 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 30, the Detroit Receiving Hospital RiverWalkers Club will hold its final session for 2011.
