Man Killed By Car After Exiting SMART Bus

CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) - Clinton Township Police say a 20-year-old male was hit by a car and killed Thursday afternoon when he attempted to cross the street after getting off a bus.

The crash took place on southbound Gratiot, just south of 15 Mile Road, around 4 p.m. Police say the man attempted to cross Gratiot before being struck by a southbound vehicle.

The man is alleged to have exited a SMART bus and entered the roadway unexpectedly from between two SMART buses before being struck in the third through lane of Gratiot. The man was transported to Mt. Clemens Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6: 45 p.m.

Police say a marked cross walk was located within 100 feet of the crash site.

The 23-year-old driver of the vehicle passed through a green light at 15 Mile just before striking the pedestrian.

Police say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. Names of both parties involved were not immediately released.  An investigation is ongoing.

Clinton Township Police are requesting and witnesses to the crash or anyone having information pertinent to the accident to contact the department at 586-493-7900.
