Complaints Of Overcrowding At Detroit High School
DETROIT (WWJ) - While the Detroit Public Schools has been suffering from declining enrollment, there are complaints at at least one high school about too many kids in the classroom.
Some students at Henry Ford High School say some overcrowded classrooms are making learning a challenge. Brittney Lewis told WWJ Newsradio 950's Vickie Thomas there are 48 kids in her Geometry class.
"They'll come in and be disruptive and the teacher will have to continually tell them ... can you please be quiet because other kids can't listen," said Lewis.
"They've got their headphones on, they're on the phone, they're texting, they're throwing paper, cussing each other out, cussing the teachers out. It's just real bad," she said.
"I'm a 10th grader so I'm really trying to learn ... I want to go to Miami University to be a registered nurse, so I wanna learn. But, with so many people around it's so hard to learn anything," Lewis said.
Another student said there are 50 students in one of her classes, and they have to go to other rooms to find chairs.
A WWJ tipster said one class roster had 100 names on it, and of those, 66 students showed up. He said kids were sitting everywhere in the classroom -- on tables, on the floor, and standing.
WWJ has a call into the district for comment.
