Fithian's Fab Five 9-29-11

--One of the great nights for sports fans was last night. Felt like the NCAA Tourney with all the games swinging back and forth on the last day of the baseball season. Of course because the Tigers are involved made it feel like one of the greatest sports nights ever.  If you're not passionate about sports then you totally miss out on life. Last night was G-R-E-A-T.

-If I was ever going to pick the Tigers to win a series this would be the year. I like everything they have going for them except the memory of 06.  It seemed like when they were the dog in '06 they would win. Then, when the Tigers were the favorite in the World Series in '06 they came up short.  This year's team is almost totally different.  So, I'm not buying my '06 memories. Tigers win the first two games in the Bronx and win in four games.

-I'm not picking the Lions to go 16-0 or even 12-4 –yet. I think this is the week they go down. Cowboys offense finds a way to do just enough to slide by the Lions. I'll go Dallas 38 Detroit 35.

-How did I meet the greatest U.S. born goal scorer in NHL history?  By attending Livonia Franklin High School back in the day. My first day on that side of Livonia I went to football practice in mid August. Bad timing for me because practice had already started so I missed the first day of freshman football. The only other kid there at practice on the outside looking in that day said he wanted to play QB. I said why don't you? He said he was playing hockey. Who plays hockey in summer? Mike Modano played hockey in the summer –then the winter and at all times. Modano then left Franklin after his sophomore year to go pro. Two years later he was the number one draft pick of the North Stars. 21 years as a pro and a sure fire HOF in a couple of years.  In ten or twenty years when Ryan Kessler or some other U.S. born player breaks Modano's U.S.  goal scoring record – I'll break out some more stories on how I met the 2nd greatest U.S.  born goal scorer ever.

Thanks to the 97.1 listeners to turning me on to Sons of Anarchy & Breaking Bad. Never really heard of either of these shows till last week.  Then I watched some random Breaking Bad and I was sold. In the end, this week I got on Netflix and watched the first two ever Sons of Anarchy shows. Awesome. If you wonder what I'm doing when not watching games now-a-days it will be pretty easy to guess.
