Township Considers Removing Fluoride From Water System

HARTLAND TWP. (WWJ) - A Livingston County community is looking at the possibility of removing fluoride from its water system. WWJ's Rob Sanford reports a public hearing is being planned on the issue.

Adding fluoride to municipal water systems has been done for decades as one way to help fight tooth decay.

But now, Hartland Township in Livingston County is considering the possibility of stopping the fluoridation of his water supply.

The biggest reason for removing fluoride from the water system would be to reduce the cost of water because it's expense to add the chemical.

Right now, the township adds only about half of the maximum allowed under federal guidelines.

Last spring, Mt Clemens stopped fluoridation for the same reason - the cost.
