Hackel Issues '1,000 Mile Challenge' To Clean Up County

MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) - Looking for something worthwhile to do in your spare time?  If you live in Macomb County, Executive Mark Hackel has a suggestion for you.

Hackel kicked off his "1,000 Mile Challenge," asking residents to pitch in and help clean roadways. Individuals, families, businesses, charitable organizations, schools and other groups can adopt a section of road and contribute to the beautification of their community.

"Let's face it, I mean, it's about curb appeal. It's trying to get people to realize, you know what? This is a nice looking neighborhood. It's clean," said Hackel.

"We talk about it from a safety feature when we talk about keeping our roads safe, but let's keep them clean at the same time," he said.

Macomb County's Adopt-A-County Road program was started over 30 years ago. However, support for the initiative has diminished in recent years.  Hackel said the county is re-launching the program, offering up new spans for sponsorship and again enforcing the rules for those who have already sponsored a road.

Hackle said you can pick the stretch of road you want, promise to clean it at least twice a year and the county will provide you will all of the supplies you need.
