State: Welfare Recipients Can Exempt One Car

KATHY BARKS HOFFMAN, Associated Press

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The debate is over: Michigan is changing its policy so food stamp applicants can exempt one car under new requirements limiting how much they can own and still get assistance.

State Department of Human Services Director Maura Corrigan told The Associated Press on Wednesday the agency will make the change on Jan. 1 so food stamp applicants can keep two cars to get to work, school and job interviews.

The agency last month began telling applicants who owned vehicles with market values of more than $15,000 they'd no longer be eligible for assistance.

Starting in January, applicants can exempt one vehicle. The second can't be worth more than $15,000.

The vehicle limit is part of a new requirement that says low-income applicants must have less than $5,000 in the bank to receive assistance.
