Detroit Prepares For Election Day

DETROIT (WWJ) - Final preparations are underway in Detroit for the upcoming November election.

Elections officials told WWJ Newsradio 950 they anticipate a Nov. 8 voter turnout of just 10 percent.

City Clerk Janice Winfrey says on the ballot will be the selection of school board members from districts 1-7, and the question of whether Proposal C, Detroit's new charter, should be approved.

Winfrey said there will be a copy of the proposed charter at all precincts for voters to review.

As has happened in the past, Winfrey said challenges will be present at polling places.

"No one should really have conversation with you. They are challenging the process," said Winfrey. "If anyone has conversation with you at the polling location and you believe they're impeding, you should definitely contact one of the election day workers that's there at the precinct."

At the Detroit Election Commission office, workers have bundled election boots and ballot boxes, reading them for shipment for the various voting locations.

Winfrey said now is a good time to make certain you know where you're supposed to be voting.

"We had about 20 polling location changes and those were primarily due to school closures. That effected about 70,000 voters and they have received their new voter registration cards," she said.
