DETROIT (WWJ) - UPDATE – 2:30PM: Deal Ends Bus Driver Work Stoppage
People who catch the bus in Detroit may be waiting awhile Friday. About 100 Detroit Department of Transportation bus drivers are at work, but are refusing to drive their buses.
WWJ Newsradio 950′s Scott Ryan spoke with Henry Gaffney, spokesman for the D-DOT bus drivers union AFL-CIO Local 26, who said this was not an organized maneuver by the union.
Gaffney said it’s a matter of bus drivers fearing for their safety, citing an incident that happened Thursday afternoon.
“Our drivers are scared, they’re scared for their lives. This has been an ongoing situation about security. I think yesterday kind of just topped it off, when one of my drivers was beat up by some teenagers down in the middle of Rosa Parks and it took the police almost 30 minutes to get there, in downtown Detroit,” said Gaffney.
Speaking live on WWJ, Mayor Dave Bing spokesman Stephen Serkaian said they are working hard to resolve the matter and get drivers back on the road.
“We’re working diligently to work with the union and encouraging the drivers to get back on the buses and get on the street,” said Serkaian.
Gaffney said bus safety is an ongoing problem.
“If it’s to the point where if the driver is not safe on the bus, then the passengers are not safe, then the citizens are not safe. You know, what about them too? We have no security, you can’t get the police, nobody is doing anything to protect us. And I’ve been begging the mayor and the council for two years to do something to help us,” said Gaffney.
But, Serkaian said there are discussions in the city right now to improve bus safety.
“It is a concern. We want to protect drivers and passengers alike. We used to have police presence on the buses. We’re talking about the prospect of perhaps trailing buses with police cars. Nothing has been decided, it’s all in discussion right now,” said Serkaian. “It’s a short-term and a long-term matter… It’s all about money and it’s all about funding, and our transportation system is already stretched to the max.”
WWJ’s Vickie Thomas was at a deserted Rosa Parks Transit Center in downtown Detroit, which is typically booming with passengers and buses alike.
Saharah X. was waiting at the center for 30 minutes before flagging down a cab.
“They just try to find a way not to do their job. And then they got innocent old people, there an old lady on a cane sitting outside over there, that’s dangerous. And she got to walk? Wow. I mean, what is the world coming to? No love, no nothing. Everybody’s just thinking about themselves. Think about other people some,” she said.
Richard Moses, who rides the bus every day, was waiting a bus stop along Woodward Avenue when a D-DOT supervisor rolled up in an SUV and basically told him to find another form of transportation Friday morning.
“They said there’s no D-DOT buses running at this time and they don’t know when any will be starting back up. I just got off work, I work midnights. Luckily, I got dropped off right here or else I would have been sitting on 8 Mile and Woodward, and I’ve got to go all the way to Livernois and Warren,” said Moses.
Serkaian said they’re asking stranded riders who are waiting for the bus to get to school and work to hang on and be patient.
“We understand their frustration, we feel their pain. We simply have to ask folks to be a little bit more patient while we try to resolve this matter,” he said.
Detroit Public Schools has issued a letter to parents informing them of the situation, saying it doesn’t affect DPS yellow buses, which are running normally. They also said DPS Police Dept. personnel will provide additional watch near bus stops where children may be congregated.
A recording on the D-DOT customer service line said the department “sincerely apologizes for extreme delays in service.”

Sad to see this in Detroit, at the bus station, location named Rosa Parks. She is the one who got tired of sitting in the back of the bus and now we have black teens at the front of the bus threatening the driver. Is this what Rosa Parks wanted? I don’t think so. Solution (much cheaper than trailing each bus with a police car). Install bars and a locked gate between the driver and the passengers. Equip the driver with a loaded weapon. If they’re going to act like a bunch of thugs, treat them like a bunch of thugs.

This is another of our failed education system. If you do a little reading you will find that our country’s workforce and the widening gap between rich and poor are directly related to non-government employees losing their unions.
I was in the Merchant Marines and we had to strike to get food that was not rotten and bunks without fleas.

Solution:
First,
Use video, people must look into a camera as they get on the bus. No head coverings allowed. This data is kept along with video of activity on the bus [like many schools have].
Second,
Increase penalties for attacks. Give them something “real”. Attacking a bus driver gets you an automatic 30 years, no parol– for an adult. Attacks by kids gets you until your 18, plus an extra 20 years.
Make the penalties so damn harsh no one in their right minds would think twice.

If the public response is typical the driver(s) will be condemned and fired immediately at the behest of concerned and responsible commintiy leaders who firmly believe that the mere existence of a politce force eliminates any excuse for commoners to go armed.

I have been on buses with armed guards. The guards scared me way more than whatever they were supposed to be protecting us from. Buses are not good places for projectiles to be flying around, especially not when the guns are in the hands of people who are supposed to be driving the bus. Unless you give them a thumb card”. Prisons use them to control and track inmates they require the inmate to both swipe the card and press their thumb to the recognition pad for admitance to an area. The Detroit bus system could use such a system with an airlock style entry to identify the people using the bus leaving no doubt who is responsible for the deeds of the person entering there. Of course the driver would need to have a seperate door which could be accessed only by them to complete the system. To be sure the system would be expensive, but what is money to Detroit? Of course with our booming economy we can afford such lavish measures to cover for the lack of parenting skills in our residents right? No? Awww too bad.

A *voluntary* program of paid (eg, 200k – 500k cash per person) permanent Black return to Africa would be desirable.
The initial outlay would be offset by the lifetime savings to society in other areas.
Many Blacks with no prospects in the US would take the money. They could start a new life in an African society, where that money would go quite far. They could buy a house in an African city, a car, & start a business.
Many US Blacks would have far greater relative status & opportunity starting fresh in Africa than staying in the ghetto. It is a fair deal for all parties concerned IMHO.

MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) – The Macomb County Sheriff’s office is investigating allegations that a janitor who worked at a Mount Clemens school impregnated an 11-year-old girl.
The 28-year-old janitor was employed by a private firm, but worked for a month or two at the Prevail Academy School, a charter school on Cass Avenue near Grosebeck Highway.
The young student, who is now 12-years-old, reportedly had the baby earlier this month.
Sheriff Anthony Wickersham told WWJ Newsradio 950 this could be the youngest girl he’s seen in a case like this. He said, as far as the janitor’s involvement, it’s only an allegation that is being investigated.
WWJ’s Vickie Thomas reports the janitor has ties to the girl’s family and may have been dating the girl’s mother.

Sounds so nice to say “arm the drivers” but reality is we are currently prosecuting a US drug enforcement officer because an admitted mexican drug runner that he arrested took a deal with the MEXICAN government to say he held the drug runners arms up too high when arresting the guy while wearing a heavy backpack full of cocaine in the US desert. The bus drivers would be armed then placed in jail for using excessive force when defending themselves by shooting their attacker in the foot when the driver was threatened with a machinegun. As a former Detroiter…Our family worked and lived in Detroit for 5 generations. But I learned my lesson in 1967, got the hell out of there and never looked back. Detroit used to be about 50/50 and everyone got along. Then came Good’ol Mayor Young. His corruption lead to the death of Detroit. Anyone that lives there still deserves what they get.

Average White IQ 100
Average Black IQ 85
Half of Blacks have an IQ under 85. 16 percent of Blacks have an IQ under 70. Only 16 percent of Blacks have an IQ over 100. It’s only natural that Blacks have so many problems with stats like that. And if you want to dismiss the value of IQ, then try to find a brain surgeon with an IQ of 85. You won’t.

I lived there once it was the most racist culture I have encountered in my travels from the south of the US to the African continent there are few places that can hold a candle to detroit in divisiveness from all sides. As I was leaving the Iranian groups were settling into the area. They were not the evil Ayatollah idiots with nothing but hate and failure in their hearts but the educated hard working Iranians who had been trying to raise Iran to first world status in a single generation just prior to the failure that is the current religious prison there now. I entered the US military there and went to see much of the world outside and inside of the US. After over 20 years at that job traveling outside of that bubble of failure and living in the actively anti-racist military culture where most of the successful black man have gone I found no reason to return there. I have been sad but not surprised to hear of the failure and decay back in the city of my birth. I have been saddened but just as it is written “A house divided cannot stand” and Detroit is so divided in so many ways it is a wonder that it made it this far. I am sure things will totter along for a while yet but the culture of gangs and entitlement must be brought under control before rebirth can occur there. Lets hope not every one living there is beyond recovery.

Lots of garbage but a few good points stand out from the trash. The racialist morons, as usual, are as clueless as Laurel and Hardy on a “bad hair day”.
The key that a couple of people have recognized is that this is a CREATED situation. It is not just a matter of black or white because you can find similar problems on a smaller scale in “White Only” Trailer Parks throughout the South and in predominantly white neighborhoods in a lot of major cities. Hint to the racist morons: The neighborhood in my city called “Felony Flats” is largely an ALL WHITE neighborhood. Criminality and uncivilized behavior is not the exclusive territory of Black America.
If you take a look at history, I know a big stretch for people who get their Nooze from the Tee Bee, you could trace the progress of Black America through the 1950′s and see that the Civil Rights Movement was making major inroads in establishing the legitimate demand for equal opportunity. Get that. The fight was not for Gub’mint hand outs but for right to enjoy basic human dignity including the right to work and to have an equal opportunity including education, and access to jobs.
Also during that time Black families were just that – families. There was a mother, a FATHER, and the little rug rats. Most lived in poverty and were treated, shamefully, as second class citizens or less, and they had every right to be fed up to the point where they were “MAD AS HELL AND NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANY MORE!”
In the early 1960′s the Civil Rights movement was really beginning to take hold and the demand for equal treatment was not only gaining greater prominence but the society was slowly moving in that direction. Yes, it was a slow movement and the self centered morons who insist upon looking at the world in racialist perversion were fighting against it, but they were losing, and here’s the key, because a MAJORITY of whites agreed that the demands being made by the Civil Rights Movement were reasonable and just. More than one white kid was offed by the psychotics of the Klan because of their support for equality of opportunity.
That most important points were all was lost with the introduction of Lyndon Johnson’s “Great Society” – which provided a subsidy for irresponsibility and penalized intact families. Women without husbands had a much easier time of getting on the public dole and the more children that the Welfare Breeders produced the more money they got in that Welfare Check.
Any economist, except idiot Keynesians, will tell you that the basic principle at play is that whatever you reward you will get more of and whatever you penalize you will get less of.
So, illegitimate birth was subsidized by the government and intact families were penalized. The consequences were obvious and were predicted by some at the time but they were shouted down as “hard hearted Scrooges”.
Know what? The Scrooges were right. The current situation is largely attributable to the implementation of welfare programs, sold as a kindness, but were in reality a cruelty. It took away the need to work, and the dignity work brings, subsidized sloth and ignorance and that is exactly what those “kind hearted” programs have produced and rewarded. Yes, there were other elements – Coleman Young was one of the most corrupt Mayors in America and his administration destroyed Detroit the City, but the culture of dependence and cycle of poverty was CREATED by all of those Welfare Programs.
The cycle of poverty, and violence, will not end so long as there exist government programs that reward irresponsible and criminal behavior. It will not end until Black America decides once again that they are “MAD AS HELL AND NOT GOING TO TAKE THE DEAD END OF THE WELFARE CHECK ANY MORE!” One of the kindest things that could be done would be to rapidly phase out these programs and reduce the government restrictions which hobble small businesses from getting a start. Detroit could well see a Black Renaissance if that caught on. Your community is what YOU make it.
Oh, and another element lost along the way, that a lot of people miss, is that one of the key elements of the Civil Rights Message was to GET AN EDUCATION. This is the time when “The United Negro College Fund” was established, and yes a mind is a horrible thing to waste. Ignorance begets ignorance and the cycle of poverty is continued by remaining ignorant and uneducated. One of the most poisonous elements in current Black Culture is that getting an education is to be avoided because “that’s actin’ white”. So, it is good to remain ignorant and poorly educated, poor, and dependent on government hand-outs?
Oh, and the “well meaning” White Liberals who created all these welfare programs? They knew exactly what they were doing at the time they did it. It did its job and destroyed the Civil Rights Movement and reversed all the progress that had been achieved by people who put their lives on the line to fight for a BETTER future.

Simple solution, train the bus drivers to carry a concealed weapon. Put a sign up that the driver is armed and will defend himself and the passengers at all costs.

The Detroit officers dispatched were driving a car which runs on used doughnut frying oil. Small pieces of donut somehow escaped the filtering process when the oil was converted into biodiesel, and completely clogged their car’s fuel filter. They did arrive, but only after 30 minutes of herky-jerky start-stop-and-go driving, the car belching sooty, half-burnt doughnut oil, the aroma trailable for miles. The bus driver thought they had been in a doughnut shop during his wait, based upon the aroma in their uniforms. Realizing the city buses, which also run on doughnut oil, might also have a bad batch of biodiesel, none of the bus drivers reported for work the next day.

If you interview 100 people as they move out of Detroit and ask them WHY are you leaving? At least 90 of them will tell you they are leaving because they no longer feel safe. The Wayne County Criminal Justice System is soft on criminals and until they (Judges in Detroit) realize that they must get serious and actually hold criminals accountable for their decisions and crimes, our beautiful city will continue to decay from the inside-out. Punishment for crime in Detroit is often a joke and many progressive judges in Detroit actually believe that the criminal is not at fault for the crime they committed. They believe SOCIETY is responsible for the crime and the criminal is innocent.

The solution is quite easy: Adopt Arizona’s gun laws. You do not need any license to own a gun, and you may conceal it or carry it open — both without permits.

The city of Detroit and the surrounding suburbs have a unique situation. The city runs their own bus service within city limits, the surrounding communities have a complete separate system. Since most poor whites live outside the city, their bus transportation hasn’t been affected.
