Street Lights Heating Up Highland Park Mayoral Race

HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - Voters in many communities will be heading to the polls on Tuesday to decide on a number of ballot issues, as well as choosing mayors and council members -- but one of the closest races will be in Highland Park.

City Councilman DeAndre Windom is taking on incumbent Mayor Hubert Yopp. The de-commissioning of some street lights in the city is a hot issue. Yopp says city council decided which street lights would be removed, not him. But, he says it was needed to pay off DTE Energy.

"The forgiveness of that $4.5 million debt certainly kept us - the city - from going into receivership cause eventually we would have gone there," Yopp told WWJ's City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas.

Like the mayor, Windom says he's working on solutions.

"I'm still currently working with some representation from California on addressing the street lights in the city of Highland Park," Windom said.
