Wayne State Meets Pittsburg State For D-II title

JOHN ZENOR,AP Sports Writer

FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — Wayne State is seeking another first in its surprising run through the Division II playoffs.

The unranked Warriors face Pittsburg State in the national championship game Saturday in Florence, Ala. They've made the most of their first playoff appearance with four straight road wins.

Pittsburg State is in the playoffs for the 17th time and is making its fifth title-game appearance. The Gorillas' only title came in 1991. Second-year head coach Tim Beck is in his 25th season with the school and was an assistant on that team.

Wayne State coach Paul Winters says players at the Detroit school aren't "intimidated or overwhelmed by the situation."

Pittsburg State is led by dual-threat quarterback Zac Dickey. Wayne State's Tony Davis and Josh Renel both have 1,300-plus rushing yards.
